Outdoor curtains waterproofed in California

California officials say they have begun using the technology to waterproof outdoor curtains, but are unsure how many of the 1,000 curtains that are now being used will survive a flood.

State water officials say the devices are made of a durable material that is able to withstand floodwater and saltwater.

The new waterproofing materials, called redgard, are water-resistant to the high temperatures and low pressures of a flood, and they have been approved for use in California.

But the state has not yet decided whether to distribute the devices to people in the floodplain, said Jennifer Stegman, a spokeswoman for the California Department of Water Resources.
